NEW TO THE WEEKLY BULLETIN…THE ANSWER IS IN THE ROOM
Each week, Mr. Kearns and Ms. Paz will work with colleagues from all over the building to share out instructional best practices with one another. Each week will focus on a different instructional topic connected to our Problem of Practice.
Here are some highlights of the best practices shared after the last round of intervisitations; all are focused on DIFFERENT METHODS OF SCAFFOLDING.
In the Science Department, Ms. Herrick created graphic organizers and exit tickets to facilitate students' understanding of experimental design.

In the Math Department, Ms. Dye and Ms. La Tanza used partially completed proofs with various levels of difficulty to emphasize vertical angles and the reflexive property.
In the Social Studies Department, Ms. Looser created a scaffolded handout to teach The Articles of Confederation to her self-contained 9th grade students. She includes images, scaffolded questions, and a challenge task.
In the English Department, Ms. Eisenberg tiered reading passages, and use texts that students are likely familiar with to teach her 10th grade students the literary element "point of view"
In the CTE Department, Mr. Carranza used very general questions that all students could answer, which created a strong sense of participation among students. Gradually, Mr. Carranza asked more specific questions. He then used a Venn diagram to have students organize all of the key similarities and differences between fashion in the 1910's & 1920's. This visual aid allowed for students to have a strong understanding of which characteristics belonged to the corresponding decade and provided them with an informational reference when designing their creative look inspired by the time period.

PBIS CALL TO ACTION
● WHERE DID THE TIME GO? END OF THE 2ND MARKING PERIOD COMING SOON
The second marking period ends next week on December 6 – please make sure your students know; explain cumulative grading once again; and make the necessary National Honor Society referrals.
● CONTACT PARENTS YOU DID NOT SEE AT CONFERENCES & NEED TO SEE!
It is important to get in touch with the parents that you needed to see and did not see at Parent-Teacher conferences.
● IMPORTANT HOLIDAY REMINDERS
(1) Many of our students do their holiday shopping at our FLY school store – make sure you are giving out Fashion Dollars every class, every day
(2) The holidays are a sensitive time for many people, young and old, if you see a dramatic change in mood or behavior, fill out a Guidance referral
(3) Let a counselor or supervisor know if you see a student without a warm coat as they enter or leave the building
(4) Secure your personal and DOE valuables in your classrooms and offices

● MESSAGE FROM THE GRAPHICS & ILLUSTRATION DEPT. – ADOBE EXAMS BEING ADMINISTERED
The CTE department has begun administering the Adobe Photoshop certification exam to all Senior Graphics & Illustration students. The exam runs longer than 45 minutes unfortunately. We will be giving this exam weekly on Thursdays until most of the students in the Advanced Digital Photography class have been given a chance to pass the certification. Students will be given a late pass to 5th or 8th period if they have taken the exam the period prior. Thanks for your understanding, please allow the student to make up any missing work.
● RECYCLE USED PRINTER CARTRIDGES TO BENEFIT THE GLEN SEARS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Please return your used printer cartridges that will go towards the Glen Sears scholarship fund. The more we return, the more money that goes toward the scholarships in June. To date, we have returned approximately 40 tons of used cartridges. There is no doubt that any other city high school even comes close to that! Used printer cartridges should be returned to Room 244. They can be left outside Room 244 before 3pm if the door is locked.
● COLLEGE RECOMMENDATION DEADLINE INFORMATION
There are many colleges that have December 1st deadlines. Please make sure if you are writing a recommendation for a student who has a deadline of December 1st, that you submit all documents necessary (recommendations, common app teacher evaluation) no later than November 28th. This will allow the counselors to send off all documents by December 1st.
● HSFI SHIRTS
If you are interested in purchasing one of these HSFI shirts with your name embroidered on the front, please fill out the form that was placed in your mailbox – we need more customers to get the best price. The cost depends on how many staff sign up - 24.00 from 36 - 72 shirts / 22.00 from 72-143 / 20.00 from 144+.

Exhilarated: (adj.) feeling enthusiastic joy. After going on a three-day tour of colleges with classmates, the student returned exhilarated by all she had experienced. Landing the perfect job can make a person feel exhilarated.
